France Recommends Removal of Rupture-Prone Implants

France is recommending that tens of thousands of women go under the knife again if they have silicone breast implants made by the French company Poly Implant Prothese (PIP). The implants were banned last year after it was discovered that they were made from industrial-grade grade silicone not approved for medical use and have an abnormally high rupture rate. Hundreds of thousands of PIP implants are believed to have been sold globally over the last 12 years. The implants have not been linked to a higher risk of cancer than those manufactured by other companies, but they could cause health problems if they rupture. In light of this, the French government has offered to cover the cost of corrective surgery for the 30,000 women affected in France.
