Over 1,000 Dead or Missing after Philippine Typhoon

More than 900 people were killed and tens of thousands were left homeless when a typhoon struck the southern Philippine island of Mindanao late last week, causing flash floods and landslides that swept away homes, schools, roads, and even entire villages. Many people are still missing. Survivors say that the typhoon brought huge logs crashing down mountainsides, crushing those in their path, and the government is now investigating what role illegal logging may have had in exacerbating the tragedy.
